Shocking Fact of the Day

As a fan of surfing and surf culture, as well as a surf filmmaker, I came across this article in the Surfrider Foundation’s April issue of “The Soup”, and almost fell out of my chair. So I decided to blog about how shocking it was! So here’s the facts, and i’ll quote from the article–>

“Far out of sight, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean— roughly between Hawaii and San Francisco—lies the North Pacific Gyre, popularly known as “the Pacific trash vortex” or “great Pacific garbage patch.” Estimated to be roughly the size of Texas, the patch is an accumulation of buoyant trash from around the world, carried by the sea and trapped in converging ocean currents, slowly drifting in circles for decades. Here bob water bottles, grocery bags, pen caps, hardhats and all manner of other trash. Tellingly, the vast majority of the garbage patch is made up of plastic waste.”

So for those of you who just skimmed that- let me recap the important part… There is tash accumulating int he pacific ocean- so long now- that its now the size of TEXAS!!! For you geographically challenged people, thats roughly 268,820 square miles, or big enough to fit a minimum of 35 million people. SHOCKING!!!

Trash Vortex Route

So even though earth day is over- please lets all do ourselves a favor and make more of an effort to help our mother earth. If you would like to join the Surfrider Foundation to help make a difference, please visit www.surfrider.org. To check out the full article you can click HERE….
